Life in the Bhola district is water-centered. Being an island district, people are here directly and directly involved in water-resource related activities. Ultimately fishing has become the main occupation of the islanders. Therefore, that their socio-economic development has direct consequences at both individual and community levels with respect to livelihood is water-related. The inhabitants of the island district are solely depended on boats and trawlers for transportation and fishing both. Fishers have to go in the deep seas fishing where normal boats cannot go so they take trawlers to catch fish there. After they return fishing, their trawlers are found wrecked which they cannot use another time, unless are repaired. Feeling this very need of the community people, the Bhola Dockyard was founded. The goal of the initiative was to develop a self-sustaining community infrastructure for providing maintenance services of Motor Launch vehicles and trawlers in the district.
The dockyard is set up on a piece of 101.5 decimal of land. Basically two types of activities are done in the dockyard – repair of wrecked/damaged boats and trawlers, and making of new boats and trawlers. Both steel and wooden vehicles are repaired and made here.
Equipment and Infrastructures:
To do the activities, there are a Rail-dock for big boats and trawlers and a Floor for small boats and trawlers at the dockyard. There is electricity and generator for power for 24 hours. To do the activities, there are a Rail-dock for big boats and trawlers and a Floor for small boats and trawlers at the dockyard. Previously people had to take their boats and trawlers to Barisal, Narayanganj and Chittagong for repair and making. It would consume them more than double money and time that they can do the work at the Bhola Dockyard. Because of the establishment of the dockyard, the poor fishermen and small businessmen get their boats and trawlers repaired and made at lower cost.
The project aims to enhance its services in the downstream communities for their socio-economic sustainability of the poor fishing community living along the coastal areas of Bhola district.
